About Us

LA Scale Model

Los Angeles hobby shop for Gunpla and Guomo - original-design mecha kits from Chinese third-party brands like SNAA, Motor Nuclear, and AniMester. We also carry hobby paint supplies, Splash Paints, modeling tools, and everything you need to build.

Behind it is Simon - lifelong modeler, commission builder, and someone who's wanted to run a hobby shop since his late 20s. How that dream started involves a nail clipper, a hobby shop in Baldwin Park, and a backlog that got out of hand. Here's the story, in his own words.

It Started with a Nail Clipper and a Prayer

Scale models have been part of my life since elementary school. Military models, mostly - crude builds with crude tools. Nail clippers as nippers. Parts twisted straight off the runner. Blood offerings to the scale model gods, if they exist. Everyone starts somewhere.

When my family moved to the United States, the hobby disappeared. Not from lack of interest - the community here just never materialized. This was the late '90s and early 2000s, before online shopping and YouTube made everything discoverable. The scene was out there, but life moved on. Scale modeling faded into the background.

Tony's Hobby

That changed in the early 2010s, by accident. A routine checkup at Kaiser in Baldwin Park, and right next door - a hobby shop. Tony's Hobby. The itch for scale models never fully went away, so curiosity did the rest. What happened next changed everything.

A long-lost hobby, reconnected in an instant. The store owner, Tony - the nicest guy you'll ever meet - sold me a Tamiya 1/24 Lexus LFA, a bottle of Tamiya Cement (orange cap), an X-Acto knife, and a can of Tamiya TS-16 Yellow. Before the receipt printed, Tony said something that stuck with me: "I want you to build it like your dream car and then take some photos. I want to see them."

So that's exactly what happened. A rough build and a rougher paint job, but a finished kit. Those photos went back to Tony, and from that day on, the shop became a second home. Tony taught me everything - from rattle cans to airbrushing - and the hobby never left again.

The Backlog Problem

The journey accelerated fast. Cars, planes, armor - anything within reach was getting built. And bought. Before long, a serious backlog had formed.

That's when my wife asked the question every modeler dreads: "What are you going to do with all these model kits?"

"I'll build them eventually."

In that exact moment, two things became clear. One: this was a problem. A good problem. Two: this is what I want to do. I want to be like Tony. I want to own a hobby store - a scale model hobby store - and run it well into retirement. Late 20s at the time, but the vision was already locked in.

The Family Behind the Store

The store went live in late 2022. None of this happens without my family. My wife - known around here as Mrs. LA Scale Model - packs every order that goes out. LA Scale Model Jr., my son and daughter, pitch in too.

Family-run, and we wouldn't have it any other way. Tony told me to build my dream car. This is mine.
