The YF-21 is an experimental variable fighter featured in the Macross Plus OVA and its theatrical adaptation, Macross Plus Movie Edition. It was part of U.N. Spacy's Advanced Variable Fighter initiative under Project Super Nova. The prototype was piloted by Guld Goa Bowman.It ultimately lost to the YF-19, although a handful of its final version were still produced under special circumstances. The YF-21 served as a prototype for the VF-22 Sturmvogel II, which later appeared in Macross 7, often used by ace pilots.

The YF-29 Durandal (YF-29 デュランダル YF-29 De~yurandaru) is a high performance variable fighter first seen in Macross Frontier Movie: The Wings of Goodbye. It was specifically designed to counter the Vajra during the Vajra War and is a sibling unit to the VF-25 Messiah. In A.D. 2048, the Vajra threat became apparent to the New United Nations Spacy as a result of the Gallia 4 incident. The Northrop Grumman/Bellcom VF-0 Phoenix variable fighter was an advanced prototype for the VF-1 Valkyrie which served as a flight test unit and later in 2008 as a front-line fighter, before the Valkyrie's mass production in November 2008. The fighter was developed with OverTechnology obtained from the massive alien space ship that crashed on Earth in the year 1999.In most respects, the VF-0 resembled the VF-1 Valkyrie, although its legs were longer because the EGF-127 conventional turbofan engines used by the fighter were larger and bulkier than the VF-1's FF-2001 thermonuclear engines/ Numerous fine details also differ, such as head designs. The VF-0D's wings are very different, replacing the variable sweep wings with a canard-delta configuration; although this would perform well, it would ultimately not be adopted for the production series VF-1.
