ZZA Model has three kits to its name and a brand name that sounds like an abbreviation for something more complex - but it's just ZZA. But is it? The G.U.S, their breakout 1/100 scale original mecha kit, has earned a serious reputation in the guomo community for what it delivers at the price.
The full story involves "Zoids," a failed experiment with alloy inner frames, a debut product that nearly killed the brand, and the one kit that saved it.
Throughout this article, we use the term guomo (国模, literally "domestic model") - the Chinese-language term for independent Chinese mecha model kit brands. You may know them as "third-party" kits. Same thing.
The Super Nova Connection
ZZA doesn't exist in a vacuum. It's one of several sub-brands operated under the umbrella of Super Nova (超新星/CXX), a Chinese manufacturer that's been in the model kit business for years. Super Nova has never published an official corporate org chart linking its brands together, but the connections are well-documented in the Chinese hobby community through shared tooling, overlapping product design language, and common supply chains.
The three brands carve out different design identities. SNAA leans fantasy - Nether Emperor, Fire Lord, the Round Table Knights series. IN ERA+ (the Infinite Dimension collaboration) runs sci-fi - Fenrir, Nemesis, Thunderbolt. ZZA is the military mecha line. The G.U.S is a grunt unit. The REGUS is the captain's machine. Even the product naming follows a military hierarchy. We briefly covered how these brands connect in a separate article.
Before ZZA: The "Zoids" Era (ZA Model, 2020-2022)
Wait - ZA? As in, ZA became ZZA? That's exactly what happened. The brand started as ZA Model, and it didn't make humanoid mecha at all.
ZA was Super Nova's dedicated sub-brand for 1/72 scale "Zoids" mechanical beast kits. These were unlicensed takes on Kotobukiya's HMM (High-end Master Model) Zoids lineup - same source designs, reworked with ZA's own sculpting and engineering choices. The Murasame Liger was the first release in March 2020, followed by variants like the Hayate Liger, the Berserk Fury, and the Death Stinger.
The product pattern was straightforward: release a base kit, then follow up with recolors, clear-armor variants, and limited editions using the same molds. The Liger variants all shared a common inner frame. The Death Stinger was the lineup's showpiece - a massive scorpion-type mecha that stretched roughly 50cm long and took up more shelf space than most people planned for.
Assembly quality across the ZA line was generally decent. Parts tended to run slightly soft, which actually helped with tolerance - joints didn't feel loose right after assembly, though long-term durability was another question. The kits came with water slide decals (not stickers), full inner frames, and reasonable part separation for the price.
So why did ZA stop?
Three reasons, all straightforward. First, "Zoids" never had a large following in China, and sales reflected it. Second, some community members felt the modifications to the Kotobukiya designs were overdone - that ZA was adding complexity for its own sake rather than improving on the originals. Third, and most importantly, Super Nova decided the future was in humanoid mecha. The team, the tooling capacity, and the business focus all shifted.
ZA's last known product was a blue-and-white Death Stinger variant released on 11/11/2023. No new ZA-branded kits have appeared since.
The MW Detour (2022)
Before ZZA launched, Super Nova tried something else entirely under another sub-brand called MW Model.
MW produced exactly one product: a GaoGaiGar-inspired design called the Origin Brave King (始源勇者王), released in April 2022 at 458 RMB. This was Super Nova's attempt at the premium tier - a full alloy inner frame with pre-painted snap-on armor, positioned against high-end collectible figures rather than traditional model kits.
It didn't work. The alloy inner frame joints were so tight they made posing feel like arm wrestling. The tolerances between metal frame and plastic armor panels didn't match well, creating gaps and alignment issues that shouldn't exist at 458 RMB. And for a kit at that price, too much of the surface detail relied on stickers rather than molded or painted elements.
MW never produced a second kit. The brand name still exists on paper, but in practice it's been abandoned. Super Nova learned an expensive lesson about what happens when you try to compete in a premium segment without the manufacturing precision to back it up.
ZZA Is Born (And Nearly Dies Immediately)
The transition from ZA to ZZA wasn't a clean rebrand. In late 2023, both lines were running simultaneously - ZZA launched its first humanoid mecha kit the same season that ZA was still shipping "Zoids" products like the Freedom Wings Berserk Dragon. The brand was straddling two identities at once.
The first humanoid mecha product was the Blue Flame (蓝焰, CH-01), released in July 2023. On paper, it looked ambitious. Alloy inner frame. Blue-and-white color scheme. Fire effect parts and a dedicated display base included. The parts separation was solid, the runner count was generous, and the accessories list was long.
The Chinese hobby community had opinions.
The design drew heavy comparisons to existing Gundam aesthetics - the silhouette, the inner frame structure, the color blocking. Opinions split on whether ZZA had brought enough original identity to stand apart from its influences.
The reaction was harsh. Forum threads and video reviews in China were openly skeptical about whether ZZA had a future. One product in, and the brand already felt like it might be headed for the same shelf as MW.
Then ZZA went quiet. The original Weibo account went dark, and for roughly two years, nothing new came out.
The G.U.S Changes Everything
In September 2025, ZZA resurfaced on a new Weibo account with a new product: the G.U.S (古斯, GZSS-OX). In the two years ZZA had been dark, the guomo landscape had shifted - original IP was no longer the exception, it was the expectation. SNAA, Motor Nuclear, and others had all staked out their own design identities. ZZA came back into a market where the mainstream had shifted toward original design.
The G.U.S is a grunt suit. Not a hero mecha, not a protagonist machine - a mass-production workhorse with a visor head, heavy armor, and the kind of utilitarian design language that says "deployed by the hundreds" rather than "piloted by the chosen one." If you've built Gunpla, think GM or Jesta. The Chinese hobby community immediately nicknamed it the 墨镜机 - the "sunglasses machine" - and the name stuck.
The assembly experience was a noticeable step up from the Blue Flame. Smooth fit. Logical build sequence. A relatively simplified inner frame, but for the price point, this is a lot to offer at 1/100 scale. Clean runner gates with hidden placement on the armor panels. Water slide decals. Two sets of clear parts in different styles.

I built this one myself. The quality is good - not Bandai-premium, but the fitting was great. If you've built MGs, you'll notice the plastic feels slightly different, but the tolerances are right where they need to be. One thing that caught me off guard: ZZA calls this 1/100 scale, but it came out noticeably bigger and bulkier than I expected. Stand it next to a standard MG and the G.U.S has presence.

REGUS: The Captain Upgrade
In early 2026, ZZA followed the G.U.S with the REGUS (雷古斯, GZSS-OX-001) - the "captain" version. Same GZSS platform, upgraded loadout. Where the G.U.S is the rank-and-file grunt, the REGUS is the squad commander's personal unit.
The additions are substantial: a Gundam-style V-fin head option alongside the original visor, an M-26 energy storage cannon, an anti-beam composite shield, a backpack with thruster arrays and fuel line details, and swappable armor panels for color customization. The runner count jumped from the G.U.S baseline with noticeably more weapon and equipment sprues.
Assembly quality continues the G.U.S standard - tight tolerances, clean gates, matte-finish armor plastic that photographs well and doesn't scream "toy." Community feedback has noted the proportions run toward high shoulders and shorter legs, which reads as stocky rather than heroic, and that the weapons are oversized enough to challenge some poses.
What ZZA Makes Right Now
ZZA's current product line is small and focused. Everything is 1/100 scale. Everything is original IP.
The GZSS series (G.U.S and REGUS) is the active product line. Both kits use plastic snap-fit construction with complete inner frames, water slide decals, and hidden runner gates on armor panels. The Blue Flame has also just been reprinted and is back on preorder, so ZZA is keeping both the alloy inner frame and plastic inner frame lines active.
No official product roadmap has been published. ZZA doesn't do public announcements the way some larger brands do. The GZSS inner frame is a shared platform, and the G.U.S-to-REGUS progression suggests a strategy of building variants and expansions on a common base.
Who ZZA Is For
ZZA's lane is military mecha at 1/100 scale. If the grunt-suit aesthetic speaks to you - visor heads, utilitarian armor, squad hierarchy baked into the product line - that's what ZZA is building toward.
If you're a Gunpla builder who's been curious about guomo but hasn't tried one yet, the G.U.S is a solid entry point. If you want something with more presence and don't mind a slightly busier design, the REGUS adds firepower and shelf drama.
