MG 1/100 MS-09R Rick Dom
Bandai
$61.00The MS-09R Rick Dom (リック・ドム Rikku Domu?) is a mass production space combat mobile suit and a variant of the MS-09 Dom. It was introduced in the TV anime Mobile Suit Gundam. Proposed by Zimmad as one of the competing designs for Zeon's next generation space-use mobile suit in the middle stage of the One Year War, the MS-09R was a variant of the ground-use MS-09 Dom. The MS-09 was chosen as the developmental base due to its good basic design. Its block structure was a major factor that enabled its specifications to be easily changed without modifications to its basic frame. The MS-09R removed the ground-use equipment of its predecessor and replaced them with space-use equipment, increasing its propellant capacity and its vernier thruster output. The thermonuclear jet engines on its feet were replaced with thermonuclear rocket engines. Its total spec, including cost and ease of manufacture, surpassed that of the MS-06R-2 Zaku II High Mobility Type, the most advanced mobile suit at the time.In addition to retaining the Dom's armaments, including its signature Giant Bazooka, some units under Dozle Zabi were said to be equipped with the experimental Beam Bazooka. Though the Rick Dom's generator output was insufficient to use beam weapons, the Beam Bazooka did not require energy from the mobile suit to be used. However, the weapon never reached mass production due to frequent explosions, though it was rumored that an improved variant of the Rick Dom capable of using the Beam Bazooka safely existed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a Master Grade kit different from High Grade?
Master Grade (MG) kits are 1/100 scale and feature internal frames, higher part counts, and greater articulation than High Grade (1/144) kits. They emphasize realism, mechanical detail, and structural engineering over simplicity.
What does “Ver.Ka” mean?
“Ver.Ka” stands for “Version Katoki,” referring to kits redesigned by mecha designer Hajime Katoki. These releases emphasize proportion accuracy, realistic decals, and refined mechanical detailing unique to his design style.
What is the difference between Ver.2.0 and Ver.3.0?
Each Ver. release represents a new engineering generation. Ver.2.0 added full internal frames and greater mobility, while Ver.3.0 introduced improved panel separation, sharper mechanical styling, and higher pose stability.
What is MGEX?
MGEX stands for “Master Grade Extreme.” These kits incorporate premium features such as LED light systems, metallic finishes, or layered armor effects, exemplified by the MGEX Unicorn Gundam Ver.Ka (2020).
How complex is a typical Master Grade build?
Assembly typically takes 5–10 hours depending on skill level and model complexity. MG kits are recommended for intermediate to advanced builders, though simpler MGs like the RX-78-2 Ver.2.0 are suitable for dedicated beginners.
Are Master Grade kits compatible with Bandai action bases and decals?
Yes. MG kits support Bandai’s 1/100 scale action bases and use compatible water slide or dry transfer decals, allowing custom display options and high realism.
What materials are used in Master Grade kits?
Most MG kits are made from high-quality PS, PE, and ABS plastic. Some models feature polycaps for smoother joint movement or optional metallic-plated parts for aesthetic detailing.
What are the main sub-lines under Master Grade?
Notable sub-lines include Ver.Ka (Version Katoki), Ver.2.0, Ver.3.0, and MGEX (Extreme). Each represents a different design philosophy, level of refinement, or inclusion of premium materials and mechanics.
How tall are most Master Grade Gundam kits?
Completed MG kits typically stand 18–22 cm (7–9 inches) tall depending on the mobile suit, offering a substantial display size ideal for collectors.
Can Master Grade kits be painted or customized?
Absolutely. MG kits are ideal for painting, weathering, and custom modifications. Their part separation and inner frames make them highly adaptable to advanced customization techniques.
