Evangelion Unit-00 (エヴァンゲリオン 零号機[?], "Zerogōki") is the first functional Evangelion unit created, serving as the prototype for the rest of the Evangelion series. It is piloted by Rei Ayanami. Unit-00 is the Prototype, the first successful Evangelion, and is piloted by the First Child, Rei Ayanami. The head design is similar to that of the previous failed attempts, but with only one camera. There are two domes on the top of the head, one white and one transparent green; their function (if any) is never revealed. Unit-00 is the only one of the original Evangelions that is never seen without its armor (Unit-02 was revealed in The End of Evangelion, and Unit-01 on multiple occasions) or opening its mouth; thus the appearance of its organic body is unknown.Unit-00 was initially colored orange like the previous prototypes, but its armor was damaged beyond repair by the Angel Ramiel's particle beam. The subsequent repairs and upgrades included blue armor plating in addition to other alterations made in order to make it more suitable for combat conditions. It was later refered as Evangelion Unit-00' (エヴァンゲリオン 零号機(改)[?], "Evangerion Zerogōki Kai").The upgrades to Unit-00's armor make it look more like the subsequent Evangelions, but there are still several differences or actual limitations. Shoulder pylons are added to the Unit's armor; though similar in appearance to the ones on Units 01 and 02, they are used to hold retro-rockets, as seen in the fight with the ninth Angel, Matarael. Because it is only the prototype, Unit-00 cannot be fitted with D-Type Equipment. The true nature of the soul inside Unit-00 is never specified, but it is implied to be directly connected to Rei in some fashion. Unit-00 was self-destructed by Rei in order to destroy the sixteenth Angel, Armisael.

Its most characteristic element is undoubtedly its helmet, unique for each Eva, with its prominent horn and its "collar", vaguely evoking that of a single horn oni.The armor also adds several other elements necessary for combat and piloting. First, there is the system to accommodate the Entry Plug and the umbilical cable in the back of the Evangelion below the neck. For combat, the armor has shoulder pylons that can be open to store and remove the progressive knife.

Evangelion Unit-02 (エヴァンゲリオン 弐号機, Evangerion Nigōki?) is the third Evangelion completed, the first Production Model Evangelion. The design of Unit-02 supposedly rectifies the mistakes made during the construction of Prototype Unit-00 and Test Type Unit-01, making it the first Evangelion built specifically for combat against the Angels. It is piloted by Asuka Langley Sohryu and briefly by Kaworu Nagisa. Unit-02 is a Production Model Evangelion and uses the same armor arrangement as the succeeding Unit-03 and Unit-04, along with the upgraded Unit-00'. All Evangelion using this arrangement have the same shoulder pylon design and five V-shaped armor plates on their torso.This Evangelion is unique in having bluish-purple blood, blue-gray skin, and four eyes. (All other Evangelion possess red blood, and, for all non-Mass Production Evangelion, including Unit-00, two eyes and brown skin are the standard.) The eyes are a uniform fiery orange in color.Although Unit-02 has a jaw and mouth, when armored these cannot open to the same extent as those on Unit-01, Unit-03 and Unit-04, and so there is no hinged jaw piece in the helmet. Instead, the helmet has movable sections that can shift to cover or uncover the Evangelion's eyes. Although visually similar to the original, the new design has more human-like body proportions, drastically reduced pylon size, and a narrower, redesigned head shape. The blades of armor on the lower arms have also been eliminated. Some of these changes may have been made in order to ease the animation of Unit-02's final battle, although they sometimes add a jarring visual discontinuity with the rest of the series.The "helmet-popping" mechanism is eliminated in the movie version. Although Unit-02 is never seen opening its jaws while the head is fully covered (despite the fact that it roars and makes other vocalizations), the jaw piece, when exposed later, visibly has "teeth" as per Unit-01 and others.

Evangelion Unit-03 (エヴァンゲリオン 3号機, "Evangerion Sangōki") is an Evangelion Unit that never sees action before being possessed by Bardiel in Episode 17 of Neon Genesis Evangelion. It was piloted by Tōji Suzuhara. Built by NERV Second Branch in Massachusetts, USA, Evangelion Unit-03 is one of two Units built with the Second Production Model design. It is the brother Unit of Unit-04 (Unit-03 and Unit-04 were oddly the only Evangelions who were addressed as males during the series). The United States government insisted on having the rights to build Unit-03 and Unit-04.A few minor changes were made between the first and second Production Models. Unit-03's color was unique, with much darker plates than any other Evangelion. The head was oddly shaped, too, with a rounded top and exaggerated chin. Unit-03 sports a predominately black color scheme with white and red highlights. It has grey eyes, as evidenced by the freeze-frame play of its destruction. However, when it first activated, red veins could be seen in the eyes of the Evangelion, showing the infection of the angel.  

Evangelion Production Model Custom Type-08α (汎用ヒト型決戦兵器 人造人間エヴァンゲリオン 正規実用型（ヴィレカスタム） 8号機α[?], "Hanyō Hitogata Kessen Heiki Jinzō Ningen Evangerion Seiki Jitsuyōgata (Vire Kasutamu) Hachigōki Arufa", lit. "General-Purpose Humanoid Battle Weapon Android Evangelion Utility Model (WILLE Custom) Unit Eight Alpha") is an Evangelion Unit belonging to the Rebuild of Evangelion movie series. It appears briefly in Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, the Unit is piloted by Mari Makinami Illustrious and is fighting alongside Evangelion Production Model-02'β, against the Evangelion Mark.04 during the Operation US. Evangelion Production Model Custom Type-08α (汎用ヒト型決戦兵器 人造人間エヴァンゲリオン 正規実用型（ヴィレカスタム） 8号機α[?], "Hanyō Hitogata Kessen Heiki Jinzō Ningen Evangerion Seiki Jitsuyōgata (Vire Kasutamu) Hachigōki Arufa", lit. "General-Purpose Humanoid Battle Weapon Android Evangelion Utility Model (WILLE Custom) Unit Eight Alpha") sports the same basic shape as other production model Evangelions, mainly colored pink with white trim and some yellow details. Its status as a custom type, however, causes it to have some noticeable differences. The helmet of the unit sports three horns aimed slightly backwards, with eight individual eyes colored neon green distributed in the front.

The RX-0 Unicorn Gundam 02 Banshee (aka Banshee) is a mobile suit that appears in Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn. It is built alongside its brother unit, the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam, under the Earth Federation's UC Project. Originally piloted by Marida Cruz, it was later assigned to Riddhe Marcenas.After its completion alongside the Unicorn Gundam, the Banshee was eventually stationed on Earth with the Augusta Research Lab and tested for atmospheric combat. Rather than that of a Unicorn, the Banshee's motif is that of a lion, illustrated with gold accents on the forehead, a golden collar to signify a lion's mane (the Banshee originally had the same collar as the Unicorn but this was changed after it suffered damages while battling in space), and a much more elaborate horn/V-fin.The Banshee's armor is almost entirely black, and its psycho-frame emits a golden-orange glow when the NT-D is activated. Although the Banshee lacks the Unicorn's distinctive La+ System, its performance in atmospheric combat is vastly superior, presumably because of a significant reconfiguring of the suit's operating system to account for Earth's gravity and the atmosphere's frictional resistance.Combat improvements were made according to Unicorn Gundam's battle data, which had been relayed to the Augusta Research Lab. However, the two Gundams have no major operating differences. Aside from lacking the Unicorn's La+ operating system, the Banshee's raw performance is equal to that of the Unicorn. In other words, any modification to the Banshee (i.e. atmospheric combat performance) could also be applied to the Unicorn, making both suits equal in ability.In the anime version, it weighs more than Unit 1 and has a larger effective sensor radius.
